There are many stories and legends behind the reason for naming the area with this name. However, the most logical and prominent one is that the word “mokattam” means, in Arabic, cut off or broken. The thing that typically describes the nature of El Mokattam Mountain (Gabal El Mokattam​) which are cut off at its ends, and this why it was called so. 

As for its history, the area has been mentioned in the oldest historical references for providing the Great Pyramids of Giza building process with stones.

Later, in the Middle Ages, it was a prominent area in the era of the Fatimid dynasty because it was close to their capital, “ El Fustat”. Since then, it has continued to be a prominent residential area with many important landmarks.

As for its geographical nature, El Mokattam is composed mainly of 3 plateaus or sections: the highest one, the middle one (El Hadaba El Wosta Mokattam​), and the lower one. 

The district is formed as a medium-height triangular district with an area of ​​14 square kilometers. It extends in the form of a limestone ledge, starting from the bottom at a height of 60 meters towards the east, and its maximum height is 140 meters. 

It is convex in the area towards the castle, and its height is 240 meters. El Drassa and Manshit Nasser extend from it in areas with steep slopes resulting from the quarrying activity that contributed to the disruption of its layers.
